Planned Parenthood Health Education Programs

Bilingual (English/Spanish) community health educators deliver sex education and information to adults, teens, and families throughout Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties to help them make the healthy decisions necessary to build a strong and healthy future.

 

Community-Based Education

  • Making Proud Choices! CA Edition

Health educators positively impact the sexual health outcomes of teens by delivering the gold standard of sex education: evidence-based programming. The curriculum is supplemented to be LGBTQ-inclusive. Parent/ Caregiver orientation sessions and the curriculum support teen-adult communication.

  • Positively Speaking

Positively Speaking offers a unique opportunity for audiences to better understand the life experiences of individuals living with or affected by HIV. Speakers share their stories before, during, and after diagnosis, bringing a personal dimension to prevention education, and building compassion for people living with HIV.

 

Digital Education

  • ICYC Textline

The “In Case You’re Curious” (ICYC) anonymous textline service, developed by the Colorado-based Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains affiliate, answers questions that teens have around relationships, sex, their body, birth control, sexually transmitted infections, and more. It also refers teens to their nearest Planned Parenthood health center, as needed.
 

Peer Education

  • Promotorxs (North Santa Barbara County)

One of the most successful ways to effect change in a community is through peer education.

Adult and Spanish-speaking Latinx peer educators receive rigorous training about a range of sexuality topics and community resources, with an emphasis on preventing sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Promotorxs share the knowledge they acquire with their communities, including their friends and family members, with whom they have the greatest influence. Throughout their outreach, they receive additional booster training and support in linking peers to services, including HIV testing.

 

Community Outreach

The Community Engagement team and volunteers participate in community meetings, as well as health and resource fairs, offering information about sexual and reproductive health and Planned Parenthood services.
