PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Abortion rights supporters will come together on September 10 in Phoenix for a night of music and comedy to call for abortion access for all.

PHOENIX, AZ – On September 10, 2016, Planned Parenthood Arizona (PPAZ), the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona (ACLU of AZ), and the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum Arizona (NAPAWF AZ) along with some of the nation’s leading reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations will host free music and cultural events that shine a light on the majority of Americans who support abortion rights and show how access to abortion benefits women, their families and ultimately, the country.

All Access, a series of high-energy concerts, is bringing top musical and comedic talent to Cleveland and four other events taking place simultaneously in Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, and Philadelphia. In Phoenix, we invite all ages to join for a livestreaming concert event and personal stories from local community leaders.

Hosted by Comedy Central’s Jessica Williams, the anchor event in Cleveland will feature a show-stopping headlining performance by five-time Grammy-nominated artist Sia and a performance by eight-time Latin Grammy Award-winning musical artist Natalia Lafourcade. Leslie Jones, the star of Ghostbusters and Saturday Night Live, will be a featured comedian.

“All Access is such an inclusive group that I’m proud to be a part of this. We all need to stand together and be a part of creating the future we hope to see. There is so much support out there for an inclusive, equitable society that it’s time we showed our collective power,” said Sia.

The All Access: Phoenix event is an inclusive and robust digital experience that gives participants a platform to share their personal stories and show Arizona that abortion access is a fundamental part of one’s ability to participate equally in the social, economic, and political fabric of society.

Organized by young leaders of the three host organizations (PPAZ, ACLU of AZ and NAPAWF AZ), the free event will highlight the roadblocks that have been thrown in the way of Arizonans seeking to access their fundamental right to a safe and legal abortion.  Since 2009, the Arizona legislature has passed nearly 20 new laws attempting to create barriers to accessing reproductive health care and sexual health information.  Nationwide, nearly 90% of U.S. counties have no abortion provider, leaving roughly 40% of women of reproductive age without a single health center or doctor that can perform an abortion.

This event is an opportunity to stand up and send the message that we’re not going to let politicians continue to decimate people’s access to safe and legal abortionsaid Bryan Howard President of Planned Parenthood Arizona.

“The ACLU works every day to stop attacks on reproductive freedom,” said Alessandra Soler, executive director of the ACLU of Arizona. “When people speak out in support of abortion access, we send a message to politicians that they will face political costs for introducing and passing anti-abortion bills. That’s why we hope to see big crowds at All Access events across the country.”

Kathy Nakagawa, co-chair of NAPAWF-AZ stated, "NAPAWF is committed to ensuring that all women, especially women of color who already face barriers to healthcare, have the power to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. This includes equal access to abortion coverage regardless of income or insurance. We're excited to be part of this event and to stand with PPAZ and ACLU of AZ to protect and expand reproductive rights."
