When can teens come to PPMM's health centers?

Teens are always welcome at any of our health centers. You can call your local health center to schedule an appointment.

Will my parents need to know I visited Planned Parenthood?

Our health centers provide confidential services, so your parents do not have to know that you came. Please note that we do encourage parent-teen communication, and we can help facilitate those conversations if needed. In some cases we are required by law to report certain issues or situations to agencies that can help you; please see below for more details regarding your privacy rights.

What are my privacy rights?

“Privacy” means that if you are a young person between the ages of 12-17 in California or 12-16 in Nevada, you may have tests, receive treatment or talk with us about certain issues, and we cannot tell your parents, guardians or others unless you give us permission. We also cannot tell anyone that you are our patient without your permission.

We encourage teens to discuss their healthcare concerns with their parents or other trusted adults. But teens must give us their own consent for these medical services:

  • Pregnancy test
  • Birth control
  • Sexually-transmitted disease (STD) testing and treatment
  • Abortion services

You are guaranteed that the conversation will remain private if you talk to us about personal issues, such as:

  • Use of alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco or drugs
  • School or family issues
  • Sex and sexuality issues

For your safety, some things cannot stay confidential. By law, we have to contact someone for help if you say you are:

  • Being sexually and/or physically abused
  • Going to hurt yourself or someone else
  • Are under 14 years and having sex with someone 14 or older
  • Are under 16 years and having sex with someone who is 21 or older

If you have any questions about your privacy rights, you can ask any Planned Parenthood staff member. We're here to help.

What should I bring with me?

If you have them, it is a good idea to bring your Medi-Cal, Family PACT or insurance card(s) and a picture ID, such as a driver’s license or school ID. No one will be turned away for not being able to produce these items, but you are strongly encouraged to bring them if possible.

What can I expect during my visit?

If you are a new patient, you will have forms to fill out (such as a health history, consent for services, etc.) at your first visit. Staff members can help you fill out these forms if you need help. You may be asked to provide a urine sample in case we need to run tests (such as for pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections). You will also be asked to provide a monetary donation (this is optional, and you can be seen even if you can’t donate).

Once you are registered in our computer system, you’ll be called to the back office. A medical assistant will get your vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure) and ask some basic questions, such as the reason for the visit.

Depending on the services you want/need, you may see a registered nurse or a nurse practitioner or the medical assistant may take care of all of your needs that day. If you are having symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection, such as unusual discharge, pelvic pain, pain with urination, etc., you will likely need an exam by a nurse practitioner.

How much will it cost? How can I pay for it?

In California, most reproductive health services are covered by Medi-Cal or Family PACT, so there would be no cost to you. We can sign you up for Family PACT when you come in for your visit, if needed. However, there may be some tests, medications or other services that the medical staff feel are important for you that are not covered by Family PACT or Medi-Cal, so there would be a charge to you. We accept Medi-Cal and many private insurance plans for abortion services.

If you're covered by private insurance, you may use your insurance to help pay for the visit. In California, if you are covered under another person's health plan—like your parent's or spouse's—you have the right to keep your insurance claim confidential by submitting a Confidential Communication Request form. You can learn more about this at: myhealthmyinfo.org.

In both Nevada and California we offer a sliding fee scale for all of our services.
