Many people have uncomfortable and distracting menstrual cramps during their periods, which would make anyone a bit more tense or on edge. And many menstruating people have a physical or emotional discomfort called premenstrual syndrome (PMS) about a week before they get their period, or during the first few days of their period. Symptoms of PMS include depression and other mood changes, appetite changes, backaches, feeling bloated, headaches, irritability, insomnia, sweating, and sore breasts.

There are lots things you can do to help manage period symptoms, like exercise, resting, using over-the-counter pain medicine, or even using hormonal birth control
