Abstinence has many benefits. A big benefit is that it’s the only birth control method that’s 100% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Other benefits of abstinence include:

  • enjoying your partner’s company without having to deal with a sexual relationship

  • taking your time or waiting to have sex until you’re ready

  • fully focusing on school, friends, your job, sports, or other hobbies

  • healing from trauma or an unhealthy relationship

Another benefit of choosing abstinence is that there are no negative side effects like there can be with other birth control methods. The big thing to keep in mind is whether or not you think you can be successful at being abstinent. If you’re not sure it’ll work for you, it’s a good idea to consider other birth control methods. And remember: only you get to decide if and why it’s the best choice for you.
