My vagina is too tight for my boyfriend to put his penis in. I’m a virgin and I don’t have a problem with lubrication. Is this normal?

Yes, this is normal. Some people experience pain and tightness when they try to have vaginal sex for the first time.

The hymen is a thin, fleshy tissue that stretches across part of the opening of your vagina. Hymens have at least one opening allowing menstrual blood out of your body. Some people may have more hymenal tissue than others, and stretching it open during your first time having vaginal sex may cause pain or bleeding. If you’re worried about feeling discomfort or pain the first time you have sex, you can prepare by slowly stretching your hymen with your fingers.

If this continues to be a concern for you or you’re unable to comfortably have sex when you want to, talk with a doctor or nurse about it, like the ones at your local Planned Parenthood health center. They can help you figure out what’s going on and what you can do about it.
