A certain amount of jealousy is normal. But before you let feelings of jealousy turn into anger, talk about it with your girlfriend.

It’s a good thing when both partners express themselves and share their feelings. Clear communication without fighting can be tough, but you can work on it. And remember — expressing yourself is only one-half of good communication; the other half is listening.

Some people think that jealousy is a sign of affection and love. But healthy, loving relationships help people feel safe and better about ourselves and our place in the world. Relationships that frustrate us or make us feel bad about ourselves are not as healthy as they can be.

Often, it’s very helpful for people who find they cannot control their anger to get some professional anger management counseling. Many clinical social workers and psychologists are able to help. Some communities have anger management workshops that are free and arranged through their schools. Ask your school social worker or guidance counselor to help you find a program in your community that can work for you.
