I’m pregnant and I’m thinking about adoption. But what if I change my mind?

No adoption is final until after the baby is born and you’re signed the papers agreeing to the adoption.

While you’re pregnant, you have the right to decide on adoption and change your mind later. After signing the adoption papers, you may be given a limited period of time during which you may change your mind. After that, very few adoptions are reversed by the courts.

Adoption is a legal agreement and must be taken very seriously. It’s best to think about all the pros and cons about adoption before, and to talk with a parent or another trusted adult about your choices. Before you sign any papers, read them very carefully and have your own lawyer review them. Look in the yellow pages under “adoption attorney” or ask a social worker to help you find a lawyer.

If you have questions about adoption, your local Planned Parenthood health center may be able to help.
