My mom has a birth control cap that she doesn’t use anymore. Can I use it?
No. If you’re interested in using the cap, it’s best to get your own.
The cervical cap — or FemCap — is a form of prescription birth control. A health care provider needs to make sure the FemCap fits well, so that it can be as effective as possible. There are different sizes for different women. The size that fits your mom may not be the size that you should use. Only a health care provider can know for sure the size that’s right for you.
Also, if a cap has not been stored properly or is very old, it may not be effective.
FemCap is a good choice for some teens because there are no major health concerns and because it can last from six months up to several years. If you’re interested in the cap, talk to your health care provider, or make an appointment at the Planned Parenthood health center nearest you.
