You can safely stop taking the birth control pill at any time. It’s possible to get pregnant right away once you stop taking the pill (even if you haven’t gotten your period yet). So if you’re going off the pill but you don’t want to get pregnant, make sure to use another birth control method.
When you go off the pill, your body will eventually return to the way it was before you went on it. Because your body will be going through a change in hormones, there’s a chance of temporary side effects. But they usually go away after a few months. It can also take a few months for your period to go back to what’s normal for you. There’s no way to know exactly how your body will react to going off the pill, but any negative side effects that you may have will go away within a few months as your body gets used to being off the hormones.
Talk with your nurse or doctor about any concerns you have about stopping the pill. They may be able to give you more specific information about what to expect based on your personal medical history and help you find a birth control method that works for you.
