The Pennsylvania Abortion Control Act requires a women seeking an abortion to speak to a doctor at least 24 hours before she can consent to and obtain an abortion. The law also requires all women under the age of 18 to have a parent or legal guardian consent to the abortion. This means the parent or legal guardian also must provide informed consent and be present at our health center on the day of the abortion. All women who come to PPWP for an abortion procedure, regardless of age, must have identification proving their age and identity. For minors, an original birth certificate as well as other legal documents are needed to prove guardianship if the guardian has a different last name than the minor; even if it is for reasons of marriage or divorce. The law does provide an exception for minors who cannot tell their parent or guardian that they are obtaining an abortion. This is called a Judicial Bypass. A staff person can explain and assist the minor through this process if the minor feels it is necessary for them.
