Someone asked us: What is doxypep? How can I get it and is it available online?

Doxy PEP is a medicine you take up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected vaginal, oral, or anal sex to lower your chances of getting syphilis, gonorrhea, and/or chlamydia. You can think of it as the morning after pill, but for certain STDs

Doxy PEP doesn’t help prevent HIV. A different drug, called PEP, prevents HIV. It’s safe to take Doxy PEP and PEP at the same time.

Your doctor or nurse will prescribe you one (200 mg) pill or two (100 mg) pills of Doxy PEP to swallow with plenty of water. Doxy PEP works for up to 72 hours (3 days), even if you have sex again within that time frame. While it’s safe to take Doxy PEP daily or as often as you have unprotected sex, don’t take more than 200 mg in 24 hours. Get STI testing every 3 to 6 months while taking Doxy PEP, or sooner if you have symptoms.

You may experience certain side effects while taking Doxy PEP, including nausea or vomiting if you take it on an empty stomach, so try and take it with food. The medicine can also increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, so wear sunscreen after you take it. Don’t take Doxy PEP within 2 hours of taking antacids (like Tums and Rolaids), supplements containing calcium, or dairy products because they can make Doxy PEP less effective.

Where can I get Doxy PEP?

You can get Doxy PEP via telehealth or in person at many Planned Parenthood health centers or other health clinics. Contact your nearest Planned Parenthood health center to make an appointment or for help figuring out if Doxy PEP is right for you.

How much does Doxy PEP cost?

The cost of Doxy PEP varies depending on whether you have insurance. However, the cost can range from $0 to $35 per dose. It may be fully covered by your insurance or come with a copay. In some cases, you can get Doxy PEP for low cost or even free. To learn more about your payment options, contact your nearest Planned Parenthood health center.
