Background: According to the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press’s latest poll, 54 percent of Americans support legal abortion in all or most cases, compared to 42 percent saying abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. This 12-point gap marks a significant increase in support for legal abortion. A Pew survey conducted in 2009 found just a two-point gap, with 46 percent of respondents favoring legal abortion and 44 percent opposing.
