Washington D.C.-- This morning, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in NIFLA v. Becerra, a case regarding a California law (the Reproductive FACT Act) that protects women from dangerous and misleading practices of fake women’s health centers. Outside the court, hundreds of reproductive rights activists rallied. Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, addressed the rally. Read her full remarks here.

Statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

Nobody should deceive a pregnant person about their health and options, or cause them delays in accessing real health care. Everyone deserves the right to be treated with dignity and respect, and to have medically accurate information about all of their options. That’s why we hope the Supreme Court will uphold the Ninth Circuit’s decision in this case.

Statement from Maggy Krell, Chief Legal Counsel for Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California:

The Reproductive FACT Act ensures that women have access to accurate information when they’re faced with critical health care decisions. Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California stand with Attorney General Becerra in fighting to uphold this commonsense law.

Fake women’s health centers are particularly harmful for communities that already face systemic barriers to health care, including people of color, people with low incomes, and young people. Making one trip to a fake women's health center and then to another that can actually meet their needs delays care – or can prevent people from getting care at all. Deceptive practices used by fake women’s health centers can exacerbate distrust of health care professionals, especially among Black communities and other groups that have historically faced mistreatment from the medical community.
