During an ongoing attack from anti-abortion extremists and an effort by Republican leaders in the Senate to block Planned Parenthood patients from federal benefits, dozens of celebrities have tweeted and Instagrammed their support for Planned Parenthood.
“I stand with Planned Parenthood because Planned Parenthood stands up for me,” Scarlett Johansson said in her video, posted on Instagram.
“Planned Parenthood has stood by women and their families for nearly 100 years. Now it's our turn to #standwithPP,” Lena Dunham tweeted. The actress/writer also tweeted a video sharing her support.
On Instagram, Laverne Cox captioned a quote from civil rights Audre Lorde with a series of supportive hashtags: “Wonderful thought to start the day @Regrann from @ppillinoisaction - Be powerful, don't be afraid. #PPGeneration #SpeakUp #DontbeAfraid #StandwithPP #WontBackDown
#KeepStanding #Heroes #BeStrong #AudreLorde #reprorights"
“I stand by Planned Parenthood because every woman needs a safe and supportive place to make her choice," Gaby Hoffman said in a video.
Felicity Huffman posted a video saying, “I stand with Planned Parenthood because reproductive rights are human rights.”
Kristen Bell shared a video on Twitter, saying, “I stand with Planned Parenthood because I want my girls to have access to birth control behind my back one day.”
Aisha Tyler posted a video saying, “I stand with Planned Parenthood because every woman deserves to be the architect of her own destiny.”
These celebrities aren’t alone: A poll released this week shows that 64 percent of voters, including 72 percent of Independents, do not agree with the Senate’s attempt to block Planned Parenthood patients from care.
Other celebrities — including John Legend, Sarah Paulson, Rose McGowan, and Samantha Ronson— have retweeted in support of Planned Parenthood.
The statements of support come during a smear campaign using heavily-edited, widely-debunked videos — part of a decade-long pattern of harassment by extremists obsessed with banning abortion and preventing women from accessing preventive health care at Planned Parenthood health centers. Extreme anti-abortion politicians are using this attack to justify legislation that would block Planned Parenthood patients from receiving birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, sexually transmitted infection (STI) treatment and testing, and other services.
