“Planned Parenthood strongly opposes H.R. 3, and is disappointed that it was passed out of the House Judiciary Committee. The bill is an unprecedented attempt to take comprehensive private health insurance coverage away from American women, and it is part of a war on women’s health being waged by the new extreme leadership in the House of Representatives. It would impose new taxes on families during already difficult economic times and would put women’s lives in danger.

“By effectively banning abortion coverage in state-based health insurance exchanges, H.R. 3 would end comprehensive private health insurance coverage, even when  Americans pay for it entirely with their own money.  According to health insurance industry experts, this restriction would result in private health insurance companies completely dropping comprehensive coverage. It would even prevent women from getting abortion services in cases when their health is in danger.

“In addition, individuals who have comprehensive health insurance coverage would face tax penalties because they would no longer be able to claim existing tax deductions and credits for the cost of their health care. The legislation would similarly impact small businesses and their employees.

“We urge members of the House to drop this dangerous bill, which would threaten the lives and health of American women, and would further burden families in today’s tough economic climate. It’s time for members of Congress to stop playing politics with women’s health and return their focus to the pressing issue of creating jobs and strengthening the economy.”
