Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards released the following statement congratulating Ambassador Eric Goosby on his expanded role in leading the new Office of Global Health Diplomacy and his continued leadership of the U.S. Global AIDS Program.
“Planned Parenthood congratulates Ambassador Eric Goosby on his newly expanded role as head of the Office of Global Health Diplomacy. In his new role, Ambassador Goosby has more ability to fulfill U.S. commitments to integrate reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment laid out in the recently released PEPFAR Blueprint: Creating an AIDS-free Generation.
“The creation of the Office of Global Health Diplomacy offers a great opportunity for the U.S. government to implement the vision laid out by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to prioritize women, girls and gender equality in health and development efforts and we expect Ambassador Goosby will carry this mantle forward.
“We also look forward to working with the Office of Global Health Diplomacy to ensure that the U.S. maintains its status as a leader in global health by working toward the goal of universal access to reproductive health care. There is growing support for this goal around the world, as evidenced by last summer’s London Summit on Family Planning where world leaders, business leaders, private foundations and independent organizations including Planned Parenthood pledged to increase access to contraception for women and young people worldwide.
“We will need to sustain this momentum as the United Nations and the global health community set forward-looking development benchmarks. Attaining these ambitious goals will require strong leadership from the U.S. government.”
