New Report by L2 Think Tank Ranks Planned Parenthood as Leader in Engaging and Mobilizing Online

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) scored a Digital IQ of 125, making it the sixth of all advocacy groups and 13th of all public sector groups ranked in the United States, according to a new report by L2 Think Tank. The report, L2 Digital IQ Index: Public Sector, analyzed the online and digital competence of 100 public sector entities, including advocacy groups, government agencies, industry associations, multilateral organizations, and political parties. Planned Parenthood earned a “Gifted” rating.

“Digital innovation and communication are in the DNA of Planned Parenthood, and it informs everything we do. To provide sexual health information to millions of people worldwide and advance reproductive rights, we communicate, connect and collaborate with millions of people through the Internet and social media,” said Cecile Richards, PPFA president.

The L2 Digital IQ Index analyzes four dimensions: Site, Digital Marketing, Social Media, and Mobile, to create the Digital IQ score.

“Planned Parenthood meets young people where they are and aggressively uses technology to help them protect their health and get the information and care they need and deserve in a way that makes sense to them,” said Richards. “We provide young people with health information and help them find the nearest Planned Parenthood health center through our mobile website, and we mobilize young activists and grassroots support through social media and e-mail.”

Planned Parenthood’s goal is to build the healthiest generation ever, through its commitment to sex education, sexual health information technology and youth advocacy. Planned Parenthood has a wealth of online resources, including:

*Active social media presence, with more than 150,000 online supporters on Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.

*Robust YouTube channel with 129 videos and approximately 750,000 total views

*Handy health information widgets including: “My Method,” to help women select the best forms of contraception for them, and “The Check,” to help individuals decide if they should get tested for an STI.

*Popular website (plannedparenthood.org) that receives more than two million unique visits each month and is primarily focused on providing reproductive health information in English and Spanish. A second website (plannedparenthoodaction.org) is focused on advocacy and political work.

*Co-organizing with MTV on Foursquare for the Get Yourself Tested (GYT) campaign that promotes testing for sexually transmitted infections.
