New York, NY — June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, an annual monthlong observance of LGBTQ history, achievements, community, and activism. The month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Riots, the event that sparked the modern LGBTQ rights movement. This June, Planned Parenthood is proud to reaffirm its commitment to the rights and health of LGBTQ people.

“Planned Parenthood believes that reproductive rights are deeply connected to LGBTQ rights and is proud to be a provider for so many in the LGBTQ community,” said Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards. “We care passionately about helping women, men, and young people lead healthy lives, no matter who they are or where they live.”

Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country participate in local Pride events and marches throughout the month of June each year. Planned Parenthood understands that LGBTQ people have unique health care needs, and we provide sensitive and accurate information, education, and resources on sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity to youth, parents, and men and women of all ages every day.

“Everyone deserves a sex life that is healthy, happy, and free from shame and stigma,” continued Richards. “Planned Parenthood understands how important it is for all people to have high-quality, nonjudgmental health care that affirms their identity, as well as the ability and resources to make their own health care decisions with dignity.

We’re seeing extraordinary progress on LGBTQ rights in this country, and this progress is rooted in principles that also underlie reproductive rights: that politicians should not get to decide what you do with your body or what your family looks like, and that rights in this country should not depend on the state you live in. We know that this progress will only continue.

Planned Parenthood uses social media sites like Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as innovative chat/text programs, to get accurate, sensitive information to youth, parents, and men and women every day. Planned Parenthood websites receive 60 million visits each year.

Planned Parenthood also provides educational programs and outreach in schools and communities to 1.5 million young people and parents every year — including sex education, peer education, parent-teen workshops, and support groups for LGBTQ teens. Planned Parenthood believes in sex education that covers the full range of topics affecting sexual health, and provides sensitive and accurate information, education, and resources on sexual orientation, gender, and gender identity to youth, parents, and men and women of all ages every day.

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate, serving 2.7 million patients annually through its health care service providers, and 1.5 million more through educational programs and outreach. Our doors are open to everyone.
