Washington, DC –– This weekend will mark the 51st Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act –– legislation that helped to protect Americans from voter suppression laws that disenfranchised communities across the country. Voting is a right that must be protected, and it is one of the most powerful ways for people to have their voices heard.

Thursday, August 4, Planned Parenthood Federation of America officially launched the “My Vote, My Voice” campaign –– a nonpartisan voter registration effort to get all Americans registered to vote this November, regardless of their background, beliefs, or political ideology. Voter registration efforts will take place at Planned Parenthood health centers, college campuses, community events, and online at the “My Vote, My Voice” registration page.

Planned Parenthood health centers see 2.5 million patients annually. Many of these people are young voters, people of color, or people with low-incomes –– the same communities that historically have been disenfranchised and continue to face unnecessary hurdles and discriminatory voter suppression laws when trying to vote. These disparities hurt our democracy and disproportionately impact disenfranchised communities.

Quote from Anna Keene, Planned Parenthood Generation Activist:

If we can’t all participate in our government, we all get cheated. We’re launching the “My Vote, My Voice” campaign to help ensure that every voice is heard and every vote is counted in communities across the country. No matter what your political beliefs are, if you don’t or can’t vote, then you can’t elect officials who will stand with you. It’s time we change that and push to have our voices heard.”

The My Voice, My Vote campaign is a volunteer-led effort. Volunteers across 45 states will help make sure that everyone in their local communities has the opportunity to register and vote. In addition to voter registration, volunteers will host roundtable discussions on civic engagement, voter registration trainings, and events during National Voter Registration Day; build partnerships to set up voter registration tables at schools and and other public places; and  encourage people to commit to vote to ensure their voices are heard on election day, regardless of their background, beliefs, or political ideology.
