[New York, NY] — Planned Parenthood Federation of America is pleased to announce that its Instagram account has been named one of five nominees in the Best Social: Education & Discovery category in the 19th Annual Webby Awards. In addition, Planned Parenthood’s Tumblr has been selected as an Official Honoree in the Social: Health & Fitness category.

Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by The New York Times, The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. IADAS, which nominates and selects The Webby Award Winners, is comprised of web industry experts, including Grantland’s Bill Simmons, Lucky magazine’s Editor-in-chief Eva Chen, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom, mobile phone inventor Martin Cooper, and creator of the .gif file format Steve Wilhite.

As a Webby nominee, Planned Parenthood’s Instagram account has been selected as one of the five best in the world in its category. In addition to The Webby, Planned Parenthood Instagram is also a contender for The Webby People's Voice Award, selected by the voting public. Last year, people cast over 2 million votes from over 200 countries and territories worldwide. Voting is open until Thursday April 23rd. You can vote for Planned Parenthood’s Instagramhere.

Alongside the Instagram nomination, the Academy has also acknowledged Planned Parenthood’s Tumblr as an Official Honoree. With nearly 13,000 entries received from all 50 U.S. states and over 60 countries, the Official Honoree distinction is awarded to the top 20% of all work entered that exhibits remarkable achievement.

“We are proud of our Instagram and Tumblr accounts, and are thrilled to be recognized by the Webby Awards,” said Eric Ferrero, vice president of communications for Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “Planned Parenthood is determined to provide accurate, nonjudgmental information to as many people as possible, no matter where they are.  Social media sites like Instagram and Tumblr make it possible for people to find information they need – on health, on relationships, on birth control, on STDs – and share it with others. We want our content to be fun and interesting to our followers, as well as educational, and it’s been wonderful to see people respond positively.”

Nearly 40 percent of teens aged 14 to 17 are using digital technologies to seek out health-related information, including information on sexual health. Along with their website, Planned Parenthood uses social media, digital education tools, and a chat/text program to get accurate, nonjudgmental sexual and reproductive health information to women, men, and young people every day.

“Honorees like Planned Parenthood are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet,” said David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of The Webby Awards. “It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the nearly 13,000 entries we received this year.”

As the nation’s leading provider of reproductive health care and sex education, Planned Parenthood is developing innovative ways to use technology to get women, men, and young people the information they need to make healthy decisions and take control of their sexual health.  Planned Parenthood websites, including Planned Parenthood en Español, receive an estimated 60 million visits each year.
