WASHINGTON D.C. – Planned Parenthood Federation of America condemned the Senate’s vote to approve Don Willett for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, which includes Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. In a memo sent to senators this week, Planned Parenthood outlined Willett’s long and vocal opposition to reproductive rights. His record and judicial philosophy makes clear his strong opposition to a woman’s right to safe, legal abortion and workplace equality. Willett has also consistently ruled against same-sex marriage rights and even ridiculed a transgender student and openly disparaged the basic rights of the LGBTQ community.
Statement from Dana Singiser, Vice President for Government Relations and Public Policy, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
Don Willett has been hostile towards women’s and LGBTQ rights throughout his career. It is particularly troubling that he’s being appointed to the Fifth Circuit, since that court is often a key in putting a stop to dangerous legislation coming out of Texas and Mississippi. His confirmation puts women’s reproductive rights and ability to access health care services provided at Planned Parenthood health centers in danger.
“The courts are often the last line of defense against dangerous and unconstitutional attacks on basic rights perpetrated by the Trump administration and their allies in Congress. We appreciate the senators who recognized the harm that Willett and other Trump nominees will do for the health and lives of millions of women for a generation.
