Scott Roeder was sentenced today to life in prison following his conviction for the first-degree murder of Dr. George Tiller, a physician who was a well-known expert in performing late-term surgical abortions, especially in medically complex pregnancies.  Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards issued the following statement.

“Scott Roeder’s life sentence is a reminder of the tragic loss of Dr. George Tiller, who helped women and families across America at their time of greatest need.  While Planned Parenthood is relieved that justice has been served, we continue to mourn the loss of a true hero to the medical community and to the countless women for whom Dr. Tiller provided lifesaving care.

“Judge Warren Wilbert’s decision makes it crystal clear that there is no justification for vigilante violence against health care providers who perform abortions.  Others who may harbor such plans have been put on notice that violent attacks by anti-choice extremists will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and punished decisively.

“Dr. Tiller’s loss is deeply felt by those closest to him and by all of the women in Kansas and across America who faced complicated pregnancies and were helped by Dr. Tiller.  Tragically, women who need similar help today face greater obstacles getting the care they need as a result of Dr. Tiller’s murder.  The Tiller family remains in our thoughts, and we hope that this final development brings some comfort to this tragic period of their lives.”
