WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, through a series of tweets, President Trump announced that he intends to bar transgender people from serving in any capacity in the United States military. Planned Parenthood Federation of America joins people and organizations from across the political spectrum in condemning this policy, issuing the following statement from Executive Vice President, Dawn Laguens:

“It is utterly appalling for the Trump administration to target transgender people by barring them from serving our nation and threatening their access to health care. For President Trump to claim that health care is a cost that our nation can’t afford for our service members is downright cruel and intolerable. This is blatant discrimination.

“Scapegoating the currently-enrolled transgender members of our armed services and others who would seek to serve our nation is an affront to this country’s values, and on those who overcome often unimaginable barriers to live their lives bravely and honestly. As a gender-affirming health care provider, Planned Parenthood will continue to fight for the dignity and well-being of our transgender staff, patients, supporters, and people of all gender identities.”
