WASHINGTON — Planned Parenthood Federation of America released the following statement honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his commitment to reducing racial disparities in access to health care. Dr. King spoke passionately about the need for equity in health care, saying in 1966 that “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.”

In 1966, Planned Parenthood presented Dr. King with the Planned Parenthood Federation of America Margaret Sanger Award, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of his excellence and leadership in furthering reproductive health and rights.
Statement from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“Planned Parenthood Federation of America is proud to celebrate the remarkable life, mission, and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We share Dr. King’s belief that every person — regardless of race, gender or age — should have access to high-quality, affordable health care. We are working every day to reduce racial disparities in health care, including the high rates of cancers, sexually transmitted infections, and unplanned pregnancy among African Americans.

“Dr. King’s hope for accessible and affordable health care will become a reality for millions more people who will be eligible for health insurance and preventive care under the Affordable Care Act. Planned Parenthood looks forward to helping people access quality, affordable care —especially those most in need.”
