Washington, DC — Today, the Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether the Trump administration’s decision to terminate the highly successful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), putting over 800,000 immigrant people at risk of deportation in 2020, was unlawful.

Statement from Alexis McGill Johnson, Acting President, Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

“At Planned Parenthood, we believe that no one’s health should be compromised because of their immigration status. Terminating DACA would do irreparable harm to communities that already face discrimination and barriers to accessing health care in this country. We will not silently stand by as DACA recipients, many of whom are part of the Planned Parenthood community and rely on Planned Parenthood for health care, are stripped of their rights and protections. The fate of DACA recipients and the future of the DACA program lies in the hands of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court should confirm what several lower courts all around the country have already ruled: that the Trump administration’s decision to terminate DACA was illegal.”

Regardless of how the Supreme Court rules, Planned Parenthood calls on Congress to pass the American Dream & Promise Act, H.R. 6. It was passed by the House with a strong, bipartisan majority vote. Senator McConnell should stop his continued obstruction and allow an up-or-down vote in the Senate. Only Congress can provide irrefutable, permanent protections for undocumented individuals and their families.
