The #IStandWithPP badge helps supporters to start a conversation about reproductive rights

NEW YORK — Planned Parenthood Federation of America announced a new partnership with OkCupid today to introduce a Planned Parenthood badge on the app that enables people to find—and connect with—other members who support the organization and access to reproductive health and rights. The in-app badge rolls out today, kicking off a week-long promotion of sexual health information and tips via OkCupid’s and Planned Parenthood’s social media channels.

The new badge will read “#IStandWithPP” and will be prominently displayed on the profile of every OkCupid member who has publicly responded “no” to the question, “Should the government defund Planned Parenthood?” Over 80 percent of OkCupid members support Planned Parenthood, including 90 percent of millennial women. The app will promote daters with the badge to others who also have it so they can connect about what’s important to them.

“Knowing that your prospective date supports equal rights, access to reproductive health care, and the best evidence-based sex education is undeniably sexy, and OkCupid's new Planned Parenthood badge will let users see that immediately,” said Dawn Laguens, executive vice president at Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “At Planned Parenthood, we are continually looking for innovative approaches to get people the information and care they need to lead healthy lives and achieve their goals – whether that’s on their phones or in a health center.”

As part of our commitment to providing accurate sexual and reproductive health information to as many people as possible, no matter where they are, Planned Parenthood collaborated with the dating website and app to build support for Planned Parenthood’s fight for reproductive rights into its high-tech algorithms used to connect people based on their shared beliefs and interests. The new #IStandWithPP badge will allow those who want to publicly show their support for Planned Parenthood to do so.

“OkCupid’s partnership with Planned Parenthood is really exciting because it enables us to help people connect on the issues that matter to them.  In this current climate, this matters more than ever when it comes to finding ‘your person,’” said Melissa Hobley, CMO, OkCupid. “We know that Planned Parenthood is driving conversations, support, and education that millions care about. When we looked at the data, we saw that our community on OkCupid was talking about Planned Parenthood...so we decided to make it easy to find the folks who cared about the same thing.”

This partnership comes as part of a sustained effort of support by major brands that stand with Planned Parenthood and support access to sexual and reproductive health care. This effort has recently included partnerships with the Seattle Storm WNBA team, Warner Bros, Tumblr, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

This year has seen some of the most intense political fights to protect Planned Parenthood and access to reproductive health and rights in a generation, including the effort to defeat the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the repeal of the Affordable Care Act in the U.S. House and Senate.

KEY FACTS ABOUT POLITICAL ATTACKS ON PLANNED PARENTHOOD:

FACT: Blocking people’s access to care at Planned Parenthood would have a devastating impact on people’s health. If enacted, prohibiting individuals from accessing preventive care at Planned Parenthood health centers would have a devastating impact on the 2.4 million people who rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for essential health services.

FACT: A powerful editorial in the Washington Post underscores the devastating impact of blocking access to care at Planned Parenthood: “Of all the magical thinking that has gone into Republican proposals to replace Obamacare, none has been more fanciful than the argument accompanying efforts to defund Planned Parenthood… In truth, millions of women would lose access to critical health care.”

FACT: The term “defunding” Planned Parenthood is a misnomer. Planned Parenthood does not get a blank check from the federal government, and it’s not a line item in the federal budget. Planned Parenthood receives reimbursements, just like hospitals and other health care organizations, for providing preventive care. Federal law already prohibits federal funding from going to abortion services. A career HHS OIG official explains there is no federal funding of abortion in The Hill.

FACT: A bipartisan majority of Americans support Planned Parenthood and oppose “defunding.”

  • Quinnipiac poll shows that 80 percent of voters, including 67 percent of Republicans, oppose efforts to block people from getting care at Planned Parenthood.

  • NBC News/WSJ poll shows that only 12 percent of voters in “Trump” counties support the House version of Trumpcare. Forty-one percent said it was a “bad idea.” (NBC News/WSJ polled 439 counties where Trump either significantly outperformed Mitt Romney’s vote in 2012 or flipped the vote from President Barack Obama. In these counties, Trump’s job approval rating stands at 50 percent — about 10 points higher than in most national polls).
