Joint Initiative Brings Together Cancer Survivors, Elected Officials, Community Partners, Celebrities to Raise Awareness about Breast Health among Women of Color

Miami, FL  -- Last night, hundreds of supporters in Miami, FL joined Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast and Black Entertainment Television (BET) Networks for the Breast Party Ever -- a community event to raise awareness about the importance of breast health in women ages 20 to 40. The organizations have come together for the second annual Breast Party Ever, a series of events across the country that brings women together during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month to celebrate breast health education and lifesaving health services.

The Breast Party Ever brought together women, elected officials, entertainers, medical providers and community leaders to help women take charge of their health through breast cancer education and early detection.

Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast CEO Lillian Tamayo encouraged the crowd to become advocates in their communities, and educate others on the importance of annual exams and breast screenings. Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver G. Gilbert III was also in attendance.

Being Mary Jane actress Gabrielle Union joined the event and provided remarks about the importance of women staying on top of their breast health. Union shared a personal story of losing a close friend to breast cancer. Legendary hip hop artist and philanthropist Doug E. Fresh and D-Nice provided entertainment for the evening.

“The Breast Party Ever is Planned Parenthood’s way of honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month here in Miami, because we know breast health is a serious matter,” said Lillian Tamayo, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of South Florida and the Treasure Coast. “For more than 12 years we have provided breast health outreach and education across our service area.  Women, men, and young people need to understand their risk and be advocates for their own health and that of the people they love.”

The Breast Party Ever also brought together community partners to share information, including The Alliance for GLBTQ Youth, Enroll America,  the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade, and Bed Bath and Beyond.

The Breast Party Ever, hosted by Planned Parenthood and BET Networks, also traveled to Chicago and Durham, NC earlier this month.

Planned Parenthood is a leading provider of cancer screenings and breast health care for women in the fight to detect breast cancer early and to ensure good breast health.
