AUSTIN, TX – Today, attorneys for Marcela “Marcy” Balquinta and Texas Planned Parenthood family planning providers requested a temporary injunction to help protect health care access for Balquinta and tens of thousands of low-income women under the new state-funded Texas Women’s Health Program. While today’s request was denied, Planned Parenthood is confident in the merits of its case and hopes the Texas courts will ultimately rule on the side of Balquinta and the 110,000 women who rely on the program for basic, preventive health care.

While Balquinta and Planned Parenthood’s case proceeds, women may not obtain services through the Texas Women’s Health Program at Planned Parenthood health centers. Planned Parenthood will continue to do its best to work with individual patients to meet their health care needs, regardless of financial or economic status.

Statement from Patricio Gonzales, CEO, Planned Parenthood Association of Hidalgo County:

“Once and for all, we implore Texas lawmakers to stop playing politics and put women’s health first. There is no sound reason politicians should jeopardize this important program by cutting off access to the health care provider relied on by nearly half of the women seeking basic, preventive health care through the program.

“Our top priority is ensuring Texas women have access to high quality, affordable health care. Regardless of what happens in the courts, Planned Parenthood will be here for our patients. Planned Parenthood has been in Texas for more than 75 years, and we aren’t going anywhere.”
