UPDATE: On August 2, 2013, a federal judge granted a preliminary injunction against Act 37 (SB 206) allowing Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to continue providing safe and legal abortion services to Wisconsin women.
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin filed an injunction against Act 37 on July 5 to protect Wisconsin women’s access to safe and legal abortion, and on July 8, a temporary restraining order was granted against the law.
The trial for this case is set for Nov. 25, 2013.
An important letter from Teri Huyck, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin:
July 5, 2013
Today, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin announced it will file a lawsuit in federal court to stop Senate Bill 206 as soon as Governor Walker signs the bill into law to preserve women’s access to safe and legal abortion in Wisconsin. This pending new law threatens the availability of abortion at Wisconsin’s last four remaining facilities located in Appleton, Milwaukee and Madison.
We are confident that the Court will recognize that if this law is enacted, women in Wisconsin, including victims of rape and incest and women whose health and lives are at risk, will be restricted from accessing safe and legal abortion.
Senate Bill 206 is part of a nationwide effort by opponents of women’s health to end access to safe and legal abortion by requiring unnecessary hospital admitting privileges for physicians who provide abortion. No other medical procedure has this requirement. Medical experts in Wisconsin and across the country like the Wisconsin Medical Society and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists oppose these requirements because they don’t make women safer. In fact, these requirements jeopardize women’s health by limiting access to safe, high-quality health care.
Some of you may not remember the days before Roe vs. Wade. I do. It was a time that no woman should ever have to live through again. The right for a woman to make her own personal decisions about her pregnancy was a hard-fought battle and we cannot let women’s health and rights go without a fight again. When abortion is inaccessible, women’s health suffers and women die.
Planned Parenthood believes that a woman should be trusted to make her own health care decisions in consultation with her physician, family and faith, and be able to access safe, high quality health care without barriers.
We need your help! Speak out, talk to your family, your neighbors, and your friends and tell them why supporting Planned Parenthood is so critical- especially now. Ask them to make a donation to help win this fight.
With your help, the fight to protect women’s access to safe and legal abortion will continue.
Thank you for your continued support during this critical time!
