Pat McGeown proudly considers her nearly 18 years as President and CEO of Upper Hudson Planned Parenthood (UHPP) to be the defining experience of her career. In a remarkable display of devotion to Pat and to UHPP’s mission, more than 180 guests bid Pat a fond farewell at the August 2 celebration held at Normanside Country Club. One hundred supporters donated to UHPP in honor of Pat’s extraordinary leadership, and seven of her family members joined the celebration.
The evening featured a cocktail reception and a slide show with photos of Pat and her family throughout the years. Slate Hill, featuring Blue Wilder, known professionally as Blue Carreker, UHPP’s Vice President for Public Affairs and Marketing, entertained guests. After a delicious dinner, guests enjoyed a program featuring six presenters, video and singing tributes to Pat, and presentation of several gifts from UHPP’s Board of Directors and staff.
Despite almost constant opposition to Planned Parenthood, UHPP has thrived. Pat positioned the organization as a fearless advocate for reproductive health and rights. In 2010, UHPP moved its largest health center and administrative offices to a bigger, state-of-the-art facility at 855 Central Avenue in Albany. As a result, UHPP now serves more patients and education program participants than ever before.
Incoming President and CEO Chelly Hegan reflected on Pat’s inspirational leadership. “Through the years, Pat and I have faced many problems and possibilities together. I will miss that partnership. But I will repeat to myself what I have often heard her say: ‘There is nothing to be afraid of. We are smart, capable people. We will figure this out. We have figured difficult things out in the past. Why should now be any different?’”
