Where can I get tested for an STD, and do my parents have to know?

A: Minors do not need parental consent to get tested or treated for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and they do not need to notify their parents. Every state allows minors to consent to care relating to STIs.

Some states permit (but do not require) providers to notify your parents of your test results or treatment. Provider practice in this area varies. We suggest that you call your provider before you go for your test and ask if your parent would be notified of your test results, or of any treatment.

If you are concerned that you might have an infection, you can arrange a visit to your local Planned Parenthood health center. Our caring and knowledgeable staff provides a wide range of services — including STI testing and treatment services, as well as advice for preventing future infections.
