is it safe to use the same condom for both anus and vagina?

~ smokeyboii14

Dear smokeyboii14,

No, it's not safe. During sex play with a condom, change to a new condom if you go from anal to vaginal intercourse. Otherwise you could move fecal material and other bacteria into the vulva and vagina. This could cause urinary tract infections, bacterial vaginosis, or a yeast infection.

It is never a good idea to use a condom again after you have ejaculated — no matter where the condom has been. Using a condom again increases the risk that semen will leak into the vagina and cause pregnancy and/or infection. Using a condom more than once also increases the risk that it will get torn.

For the best protection against pregnancy and infection, use a new condom for each sex act and for each part of the body that may be penetrated. Used correctly, condoms are up to 98 percent effective against pregnancy and nearly 100 percent effective against HIV. They also significantly reduce the risk of other sexually transmitted infections.
