This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released sexually transmitted infection statistics for 2008 - found here. The most common diseases, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, are all preventable, yet an estimated 19 million new infections occur every year. 15 - 19 year olds have the most cases, and African American are also disproportionately affected. While these STDs are treatable, they can easily go undetected for years, putting individual at risk for chronic pelvic pain or infertility.
Reuters provides an overview of the reports, and the St. Louis Post Dispatch analyzes the numbers on a local level. Finally, check out comments from our CEO, Paula Gianino about the statistics here.
Protect yourself and your partner by staying healthy with regular STD testing to stop the spread of the diseases.
