"From Sideline to Frontline: The Making of a Reproductive Justice Plaintiff"
Rutgers School of Law–Camden
Thursday, October 10, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Please join the Rutgers School of Law–Camden as we host Beyond Roe: Reproductive Justice in a Changing World. Using the 40th Anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade as a point of departure, this conference will bring together scholars, activists, and practitioners to discuss a wide range of issues related to reproductive justice and reproductive oppression. The conference will explore and study diverse experiences rooted in differences that emerge from race, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, religion, ethnicity, histories of incarceration, education level, immigration status, age and the like.
The conference will begin with a plenary session introducing key themes and will include reflections on Planned Parenthood v. Casey by our own Linda Wharton CLAW¹81, who co-litigated the case in the Supreme Court, and an address by Byllye Avery, founder of the Black Women¹s Health Imperative, during lunch. Panels will cover topics such as faith and reproductive justice, justice in childbirth, justice in parenting, reproductive health and incarcerated women, and assisted reproduction and women’s equality.
With a broad range of thinkers addressing a multiplicity of issues, the conference will offer an opportunity to look beyond Roe and the issue of abortion to explore how to create a world in which reproductive justice is available to all. Please feel free to forward this email to any of your friends or classmates who are Rutgers School of Law–Camden graduates and anyone else who you think would find it interesting! This event is open to the public and CLE credit is available.
On Thursday, October 10, we will also be hosting a talk and reception about the compelling personal saga of Ms. Nesset-Sale, the plaintiff (and now a lawyer) from the landmark civil rights case of Cleveland Board of Education v. LaFleur, 414 U.S. 632 (1974), in which she successfully challenged overly restrictive maternity leave rules. To register for Thursday evening's free talk and reception, click here.
