Emergency Contraception (EC)

What if...

  • The condom broke
  • I missed a couple of pills
  • I was sexually assaulted
  • I had unprotected sex
  • Emergency Contraception (EC) is safe and can prevent pregnancy if used by women within five days of unprotected sex. If you have had unprotected sex within the last 5 days and would like to get EC, please walk in to any of our health centers and request the emergency contraceptive pill.

Women and men 18 or older can get the emergency contraceptive pill over-the-counter at Planned Parenthood. Women who are under 18 need a prescription, but an exam is not needed.

EC should not be used as a regular method of birth control. EC does not protect against HIV or sexually transmitted diseases. There are no serious side effects from using EC.
