Volunteer Roles

Volunteers play a major role at Planned Parenthood of the Rochester/Syracuse Region. Last year more than 400 volunteers spent more than 47,000 hours helping us to ensure that every individual has the information, services and freedom to make healthy, responsible decisions about sex, sexuality and parenthood.

Our open volunteer opportunities change regularly.  Here is a sample of the types of volunteer roles we offer:

Advocacy

FUNCTION: Perform any variety of tasks which involve being a voice for choice. This could be as simple as becoming an e-advocate, to a more involved role, depending on your interests, time availability and skills.

REQUIREMENTS: Passionate and informed about reproductive health care issues, or the desire to be more informed. Specific volunteer roles may require additional skills (to be discussed).

LOCATION(S): Rochester, Greece, Canandaigua, Batavia, Syracuse

Clinic Assistant

FUNCTION: Provides support to clinic location by assisting on activites that help streamline direct care for clients. Tasks include daily clerical and organizing duties along with providing some recovery room assistance.

Clinic Escort

FUNCTION: Clinic escorts offer patients and visitors support when coming to the clinic in Rochester (only). A friendly face and the distraction of talking to someone while approaching the clinic really helps patients feel comfortable coming to our clinics and minimizes the stress they might feel in response to demonstrator activities.

REQUIREMENTS: One 2-hour shift on a regularly scheduled day (for example, the first Tuesday of the month). Must be prepared to volunteer during all forms of inclement weather and endure ongoing verbal protestor activity. Attend training and shadowing session.

Peer Health Advocate

FUNCTION: Educate and support individual adolescent patients at the Syracuse Health Center about health center services and family planning methods. The Peer Health Advocates can either be volunteers or student interns (for academic credit).
