Make a Commercial

Target Audience: Elementary school — Adult

Length: 30 minutes

Materials: Literature on the focus topic (e.g., contraceptive methods), props (e.g., condoms, pill pack, IUD), butcher paper and felt pens.

Learning Objectives:
(1) increase knowledge of the topic presented
(2) increase confidence of student and comfort in presenting the information

Rationale:
By having students participate in the presentation of the target information, they benefit from both greater learning and retention of the subject matter, and greater confidence as a presenter.

Procedure:

1.   Break the audience into groups of 4-6 people.
2.   Assign each group a relevant topic (e.g., a specific birth control method).
3.   Give them any needed literature, materials, or props.
4.   Instruct the groups that they have 10 minutes to prepare a 30-60 second TV commercial that will convey the target information.
5.   Have each group perform their commercials for the larger group, having students applaud after each commercial, and providing any key information that was omitted.

Evaluation:
Administer a post-presentation survey asking participants to list thiree examples of the target topic (e.g. contraceptive methods), and describe how more or less comfortable, knowledgable, and/or confident they are to discuss this topic.
