Planned Parenthood welcomes volunteers of all types.
Typically, our volunteers fall into two categories:
- Interns for credit - Usually juniors and seniors at local colleges and universities. Interns are typically at Planned Parenthood for one academic semester. Early application for the semester that you wish in intern is recommended. (Suggested timeline is two to three months before you wish to start.) These internships are considered competitive and are in high demand. Submission of an application is not a guarantee of internship placement. It is highly recommended that those interns seeking Planned Parenthood placement have basic knowledge of MS office, internet and the operation of basic office equipment (i.e., copier, fax, and personal computer.)
- On-going volunteers - Usually not for credit and typically requested for various short-term projects and events. On-going volunteers may also take on specific jobs at Planned Parenthood that may fit his or her experiences and the agencies needs. (For example, a new graduate seeking volunteer hours in their area of interest, such as health education or a retired individual looking to aide our office staff in day to day administrative work.)
All Planned Parenthood volunteers must:
- Submit an online application before volunteer hours begin
- Participate in an initial interview, and at that time supply a resume if applying for an internship
- Be properly oriented by supervising staff member
- Be responsible for all paperwork and grading submissions for internship credit
- Treat volunteer hours as a job - report on time, keep supervising staff informed of changes in schedule ASAP, and dress in clean, neat clothing, appropriate to a medical center/business environment.
We promise to our volunteers:
- That you will be properly oriented to have a base knowledge of Planned Parenthood.
- That the hourly requirements of your internship will be accommodated to the best of our ability and scheduling.
- That you will be treated with respect and courtesy in a manner identical to our paid staff.
- That you will know who your supervisor is, and how to contact him or her, and that that person will be your main contact for all your volunteer-related concerns.
- That you will be assigned tasks that promote learning & growth and receive advice & support from a designated supervisor.
