Media Savvy: Getting Hip to Commercial Sexuality

This workshop helps to increase participants’ knowledge of glamorization of sex and/or violence perpetrated by the media. Participants will learn to identify several types of media and examples of sexuality as expressed in media outlets. Also participants will learn to define sexuality as it is demonstrated through visual media and will demonstrate an ability to deconstruct an ad. After this training, participants should be skilled at incorporating media-related lessons in the programming provided to youth they serve.
Birth Control Update: Options for Teens

Planned Parenthood’s highly sought after “abstinence-plus” workshop focuses on various pregnancy prevention methods. Participants will learn effective methods of teaching birth control options, including abstinence. Participants will learn the facts about and examples of hormonal, barrier, spermicidal and natural family planning methods. As a result of this training, participants will become more skilled at incorporating medically accurate birth control information into programs for youth they serve.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Update

Participants will learn the prevalence of STIs and understand that any sexual behavior puts an individual at risk for infection. After this training, participants will be able to identify various STIs including bacterial, viral and parasitic infections. Participants will also learn about screening and treatment, and will learn strategies to prevent transmission. After this session, participants will be better equipped to take STI related questions from the youth in their programs and to convey the risks of STIs.
Teenagers, Healthcare and the Law

In New York State the age of consent to sex is 17 years old; does this mean that sexually active teens 16 years old and under are criminals? In this training session, participants will learn about consent, permission, coercion, sexual offenses and the importance of healthy communication as well as minor’s rights to confidential reproductive health care services. After this training participants will be able to discuss the legal aspects of sexual relationships and reproductive healthcare with youth they serve.
