Planned Parenthood’s Sarasota Health Center offering FREE STD testing for Valentine’s Day
On Monday, February 14, Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida (PPSWCF) will offer free HIV, chlamydia and gonorrhea testing to encourage men and women who have been sexually active to make STD testing a part of their routine health care. We will offer the free testing at our Sarasota health center (736 Central Ave.) from 1:00-5:00pm.
Patients can request an appointment online at www.MyPlannedParenthood.org or by calling (941) 567.3800; while appointments are recommended, walk-ins are also welcome.
The event is an initiative of Planned Parenthood’s ongoing “Get Yourself Tested” (GYT) campaign, which aims to normalize and encourage STD testing among community members of all ages. The national observance of GYT, a collaboration between the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, MTV, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), takes place in April each year.
“We can’t emphasize enough the importance of getting tested for HIV and other STDs for all sexually active teens and adults,” said PPSWCF Medical Director Dr. Sujatha Prabhakaran. “When it comes to your health and the health of your partner, the best ways to protect yourselves are through regular testing and consistent use of condoms.”
By age 25, half of all sexually active young people will contract an STD – and many will not know it, putting their own and the health of their partner(s) at risk. According to the CDC, one in five of the more than one million Americans living with HIV doesn’t know it. In fact, many STDs, including HIV, show no symptoms for many years. Testing and treatment can save lives and reduce the spread of HIV and other STDs.
So show your partner you care – come to Planned Parenthood for free STD testing this Valentine’s Day!
