Women's Equality Day 2011

Celebrating 91 Years of Women's Suffrage

Women's Equality Day
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”
19th Amendment to the US Constitution
August 26, 1920

Great American Write-In
One day in July 1848, five brave women met for tea and sent a notice to their local newspaper about a women’s convention to be held six days later at Seneca Falls.

The Women’s Rights Movement was born at this “convention to discuss the social, civil, and religious conditions and rights of woman.” Participants drafted a Declaration of Sentiments which began: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal...”

On August 26, 1920, after a 72-year struggle, women were finally granted the right to vote nationwide. Today, we celebrate Women’s Equality Day on August 26th to serve as a reminder of women’s continuing efforts for equality.

In recognition of Women’s Equality Day 2011, marking the 91st anniversary of democracy for US women, join Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties and the Santa Barbara Pro-Choice Coalition for a large-scale lobbying effort on behalf of reproductive health and justice.
