Summer Sexuality Institute

June, 22, 23, and 24, 2009
Jackson, NH

Sexuality is an intriguing, complex, curious, taboo, diverse, scary, spellbinding, captivating, exciting, and provocative subject. It is also one of the most basic aspects of life, yet it can be a hard topic to teach and discuss.

You know the basics; now it is time to move beyond the basics, explore further and consider the future more strategically.

Sexuality and sexual expression are complicated and multi-faceted aspects of being human.  This complexity can be especially pronounced in adolescence and young adulthood.  While youth-serving professionals may address the issues surrounding sexuality and sexual expression on a daily basis, there can be little time and/or opportunity to really step back and examine human sexuality with an innovative perspective and creative approach.  It is also rare to be able to engage in a dialogue with other professionals in the field trying to focus on positive, healthy sexuality.

This intensive three-day institute will immerse participants in the latest topics and trends in the field of sexuality, provide opportunities to learn from the collective wisdom of others, and equip participants with the skill and competence to discuss these topics with students, clients, and colleagues.

While this agenda is rich in issues of adolescent sexuality, the institute will be beneficial and thought provoking for anyone interested in human sexual development.  Whether you are an elementary school teacher, a social worker with an adult case-load, or an educator working with developmentally disabled individuals, this training will benefit you.  For participants who have enjoyed our Summer Institutes in the past, we invite you to join us again to explore cutting edge research on critical, current topics that relate to sexuality and experience a renewed spark and energy with which to advocate for sexual health.  For those who are new to the field and/or new to our summer sessions, come and experience a retreat that will stimulate your mind and relax your body.

Participants will leave with:

  • "Hot off the press" information on teen reality today
  • Up-to-date information about current trends in sexuality education and new approaches to dealing with these issues
  • A deeper understanding of critical topics that relate to sexuality and ways to talk about these critical topics in both group settings and one-on-one with clients
  • Increased confidence and competence in addressing issues of sexuality with youth you work with
  • A renewed spark, energy and strategy with which to advocate for sexual health.

This training is designed for people who are ready to move past the basics and push beyond the foundations of sexuality education.  Educators, clergy, mental health counselors, medical practitioners, nurses, school personnel, social service agency staff, HIV/AIDS educators, substance abuse counselors, other youth-serving professionals, and others interested in the topic are invited to attend.
