In honor of the 35th anniversary of Roe we are collecting reflections on the importance of reproductive choice. Here are some of the stories we have received. Take a moment to read them and to send in your own story.

"I am 74 and when I was in college in Canada I had an illegal abortion. It was difficult to find someone who would perform the abortion and I finally ended up with a man who was on parole after serving a prison sentence for this "crime". I was fortunate in surviving this procedure intact. I knew others who weren't as fortunate.  Roe vs. Wade is important to me because I never want to see a single woman risking her life by having to resort to a back alley abortion."
~a PPNNE supporter

"My 16-year old son was inspired to wear a Planned Parenthood Action Fund T-shirt when he joined me for a visibility event outside the Obama rally last fall.  It was powerful to see him donning the hot pink “protect women’s health” t-shirt, though I didn’t anticipate he’d consider it a staple of his wardrobe when the rally was over.  I was wrong. He wears it to school regularly because “you can’t believe how many people don’t understand what it means to be pro choice—that is not about abortion, but about who gets to make personal medical decisions.  And, well, I also get a lot of positive attention from the girls whose opinions matter to me.”  He has mixed social networking with political action, joining the ranks of out activist team without really knowing it, changing and challenging attitudes as he goes.  He IS the face of Planned Parenthood!"
~a PPNNE employee

"When I attended Brown University from 1966-1970, the college physician (I believe his name was Roswell Johnson) was vilified in the national press for prescribing birth control pills for co-eds.  Unbelievable!  I am not generally in favor of single-issue litmus tests for political candidates.  However, this one issue is an exception.  A person who does not support choice on this most important of life's decisions simply does not share any of the values I hold dear."
