Infidelity
Understanding and Intervention
Infidelity is a common concern among committed partners. Whether an affair is emotional, physical, or both, relationships are always challenged and often fail. There can be both positive and negative consequences that arise for a couple as a result of infidelity. In this full-day seminar, Dr. Stephen Treat, founder of the Council for Relationships, will take participants on an exploration of etiology and therapeutic intervention when infidelity is a factor. The first part of the training will address the etiology of affairs, including individual pathology as well as systemic and cultural factors. Next, participants will examine emotional consequences, trust issues, and specific issues that arise when children are involved. The role of the community and family response will also be analyzed. The rest of the day will focus on therapeutic intervention, individual and systemic issues, and how to deal with emotion and "fact" finding. Structuring therapy, both in terms of individual and couple sessions will also be discussed.
Participants will:
- Examine the primary reasons for infidelity and methods of infidelity with particular attention to the internet.
- Explore issues of trust, family and community response.
- Discuss specific therapeutic interventions and therapist's use of self.
This training is geared towards therapists, counselors, social workers, clergy, and anyone else who might work with individuals or couples around issues of infidelity.
