Urinary Tract Infection Diagnosis and Treatment
Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio diagnoses urinary tract infections (UTI) and provides appropriate treatment according to your medical needs. UTIs are bacterial infections of the bladder (also called cystitis), the ureters, or the urethra. They may or may not be sexually transmitted and they are typically treated with antibiotics.
A Urinary tract infection begins in your urinary system and can become a serious health problem if left untreated and it spreads to your kidneys. Women are most at risk of getting a UTI. One in five women will likely develop one during her lifetime and many women will experience more than one.
The urinary system includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. All of these organs help remove waste from your body. The kidneys filter waste from your blood. Ureters are tubes that carry urine from your kidneys to your bladder. Urine is then stored in the bladder until it exits your body through the urethra. Any of these organs can become infected, but most infections involve the urethra and the bladder.
Symptoms may include:
- a frequent need to urinate
- inability to urinate despite the urge
- pain or burning during urination
- general discomfort
- cloudy urine
- back pain
- chills
- nausea
- fever
