Millions of Americans have sexually transmitted infections, though most people don't know it. Unfortunately, many people consider sexually transmitted infection a moral issue. But the resulting stigma and shame may lead people to neglect taking good care of their sexual health.
Some infections do not have symptoms and, if left untreated, may cause more severe problems. Testing is usually painless and only takes a short time. We recommend that you be tested for STIs if you are currently having an unusual discharge, pain, burning, bumps, or open sores in the genital area or if you have changed partners within the last 6-months.
Practicing safer sex allows couples to reduce their sexual health risks. Safer sex is anything you do to lower your risk of sexually transmitted infection. The basic rule for safer sex is to avoid contact with genital sores and prevent the exchange of body fluids, such as semen, blood, and vaginal secretions. Using condoms reduces your risk of contracting most sexually transmitted infections.
