Penny Pinchers
What is Penny Pincher's? It's a very special store.
From rummage sales held by volunteers in the 1940's and 1950's for the benefit of Planned Parenthood of Mahoning Valley (PPMV), Penny Pinchers was born.
In 1962, Mrs. Elizabeth Bentley, one of PPMV's pioneer founders, and several of her friends established a store that sold "gently used" clothing and merchandise and called it Penny Pinchers. Its purpose was not only to support Planned Parenthood, but to provide the community with a shop selling nearly new, quality clothing and household goods for the entire family at a low cost.
Since its inception in 1962, Penny Pinchers has given in excess of $200,000 to Planned Parenthood.
Penny Pinchers is maintained almost entirely by volunteers, except for the store manager and a part time sales clerk. The volunteers sort, mark and sometimes clean the donated merchandise, and keep the store looking bright and cheerful. Penny Pinchers has its own Board of Directors which is responsible for the financial health and support of the store.
Penny Pinchers, located at 4949 Market Street in Boardman, recently expanded and remodeled. There is a section for designer clothing, teens, women and men. A collection of jewelry is always available, and antiques and collectible items can be found there also. The large display window in the front changes often, and shows the most current styles available.
Your donations of gently worn clothing and household goods are always appreciated! Call Penny Pinchers at (330) 788-6736 for store hours and more information on how you can help.
