Menopause and Midlife Services
Menopause is the time in a women's life when she stops having menstrual periods. Today women can expect to live one third of their lives after menopause.
The average age for menopause is 51. However, perimenopause may begin as early as age 35.
Planned Parenthood urges you to educate yourself, stay informed and plan ahead for this time of challenges and opportunities, which could be one of the most rewarding and enriching times of your life.
To function at your best, you should:
- Exercise regularly
- Eat a balanced diet that contains enough calcium
- Consider hormone replacement therapy
- Visit your health care provider for routine checkups.
Clinicians at Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio can help middle-aged women deal with issues such as peri-menopause and menopause, hormone replacement therapy, breast care, and general women's health issues. Physical exams, screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer, referral for mammograms, birth control and hormone replacement therapy are all a part of the services we offer.
Our mid-life program is for women age 35 or older. These women may be experiencing symptoms of menopause or have already reached menopause. A physical exam is given, which includes a breast exam, pelvic exam, and assessment of the woman’s heart, lungs, and thyroid. Other tests that may be done are those that screen for diabetes, cholesterol, and blood in the stool. Call for an appointment. We do accept patients from the Pink Ribbon Project.
Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, is the use of an ovarian hormone to treat symptoms of menopause and to help prevent osteoporosis and heart disease. Hormones used are estrogen and/or progestin. Our physician will talk with the woman about the risks and benefits of these hormones so that she can decide whether or not she wants to begin this therapy.
Educational and emotional support are large parts of our mid-life services. Women are taught about the emotional, physical, sexual and social changes to expect as they experience menopause. They are given education about a variety of topics that support a healthy life style. These topics can include the woman’s dietary habits, exercise, smoking cessation, caffeine, alcohol and drug use, and tension reduction.
