International
Reproductive and sexual health is a private, personal matter and a pressing global issue essential to the lives of billions of people. But for many around the world, access to such vital health services is blocked by distance, income or politics.
According to the United Nations Population Fund, global population will grow by 50 percent to 9.3 billion by 2050. With current world population exceeding 6 billion, experts wonder how far the earth's limited resources can be stretched. Even in our global, interconnected economies few opportunities exist for the billions of people living in poverty in every corner of the earth. As the world's largest and most trusted provider of voluntary reproductive health care organization, Planned Parenthood recognizes that together we must slow population growth to create a healthy environment where children are cared for and supported, strengthen families and the communities we share, and support the fulfillment of everyone's life goals.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) works with local communities around the world to overcome these barriers through two programs in our international division: the international services program and Planned Parenthood Global Partners. In 1999, PPFA launched Global Partners to engage local affiliates and activists in a worldwide movement to improve global reproductive health and rights. The program operates with two complementary and reinforcing goals: to improve family planning here and abroad, and to build a lasting constituency for international family planning in the United States through exchange partnerships between local affiliates and family planning organizations in other countries. These programs build relationships to share ideas and expertise, nurture local leadership to fosster sustainable health programs; and share our experience in linking health services and education with advocacy for sexual and reproductive rights.
